Medium to large size, 6.0-23.0 mm; usually bicolored species, orange or red and black, occasionally mostly black; face always coarsely rugose, frons, vertex and temple smooth; occipital carina not meeting hypostomal carina, rarely also absent on vertex; frons somewhat excavated and with raised ridge between antennae; mesoscutum strongly declivous anteriorly, lobes always smooth and polished, median lobe often swollen; propodeum usually areolate, sometimes entirely smooth; fore tibia with row of 4-6 stout spines along anterior edge; hind coxa with distinct curved tooth dorsally; fore wing vein r-m present, first subdiscal cell closed at apex, second submarginal cell usually quadrate, occasionally rectangular; hind wing vein m-cu strongly angled in middle and extending nearly to wing tip, vein M+CU longer than vein 1M; basal sternal plate of first metasomal tergum 0.25 or less length of tergum; second metasomal tergum with raised oval median area delimited by smooth or scrobiculate grooves [1].

This genus is distinguished from Nervellius by the dorsal curved tooth on the hind coxa, and the absence of a cross vein in the hind wing marginal cell [1].
